Secret Suffolk – On the water

Secret Suffolk – On the water

With approximately 50 miles of beautiful Suffolk coastline to make the most of as temperatures both in and out of the sea start to warm up, why not get out on the water and enjoy some of the many water orientated activities that our region has to offer this summer?

Sailing

You can be sure to find something to suit absolutely all levels and areas of sailing ability and interest in Suffolk. From dingy sailing to chartering a yacht, from taking it easy, to racing and from paddle boarding to power boating. You really can do it all at a number of different locations, either hiring or using your own equipment. Several beginner and improver sailing courses are available for both children and adults at Alton Water reservoir or on the region’s rivers at a number of different, reputable sailing schools. On the River Orwell you have NeptuneShearwater and the Royal Harwich Yacht Club at Woolverstone, Suffolk Coast Sailing Club at Shotley, and the East Anglian Sea School at Levington. On the River Deben there are the Waldringfield and Felixstowe Ferry Sailing Clubs and further up the coast you have the Aldeburgh Yacht Club and Orford and Southwold Sailing Clubs. The choise truly is yours!

Paddle Boarding

Sailing not your thing? Why not try the new paddle boarding craze? Many of the river and reservoir sailing clubs listed above run courses and hire equipment!

Windsurfing

The Suffolk coast can be a terriffic place for windsurfing if you’re experienced – particularly at Felixstowe (go to bigsalty for advice and forecasts) – but if you’re a beginner or improver you can learn at Alton Water reservoir (age 8 years and up), where they run a variety of courses.

Surfing

You might not automatically associate Suffolk with great surf, but if you’re keen to ride a wave here, don’t be deterred! The relatively shallow sea floors make it a great place for beginners and particularly for body boarding. Those in the know recommend the north of the county as the best place to go – with Lowestoft, southwold and Walberswick all benefitting from the necessary northerly swells. Check out Southwold Surf School for lessons and surf hire!
